Bockin, Leonard

 

Leonard Bockin was born in Bottesford, Leicestershire in 1884. The 1901 Census shows that he was a Railway Porter, living at 10 Belvoir Road, Bottesford. He was living with his father John aged 56 and his Mother Elizabeth aged 57. His Brother Robert aged 24 and sister Edith aged 13 also resided.

He was married in the April, May, June quarter of 1904 in Mansfield to Sarah Ann Clarke in Mansfield.

On 29th February 1908, Leonard's second child Ethel was born. At this time Leonard was living with his wife at 39 High Street, Mansfield Woodhouse.
His occupation on the birth certificate shows Coal Miner. It is believed that Leonard met his death whilst in the mine, however this has yet to be proven
Why he is on the war memorial still remains a mystery as no military service can be found for him at all.

Enlisted in the 8th Sherwood Foresters in September 1914, joining from Mansfield Colliery. He was sent to Ireland with the 8th Sherwood Foresters and remained there for 9 months. In February 1918 he was sent to France and on May 1st he was promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant whilst in the field. He returned to England for his Commission and returned to France with the North Staffordshire Regiment Easter Monday 1918.
