Son of John Plowright Houfton MP and Frances Houfton of Park Hall, Mansfield Woodhouse.

He was educated at the Leys School in Cambridge and the London University where he trained as a civil engineer.

Was commissioned into the 8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters on 7th September 1914 and went to the front with them in August 1915.

He was sent home on 3 weeks leave to recover from the effects of being gassed a few weeks before he was killed.

On his return to his Battalion, they took over part of the line that had been occupied by Indian soldiers. The trenches had been left in an appalling state and the Foresters spent most of their time carrying out the necessary work to make these trenches secure.

On the morning of 11th November 1915, Lieutenant Houfton was walking from one end of the Foresters line to the other when he was shot in the head by a sniper who had been following his movements.

When his men got to him he was still alive but unconscious, they dressed his wounds and he was admitted to the hospital. In the early hours of the 12th November, Lieutenant Houfton succumbed to his wounds having not regained consciousness. In his pocket was a letter which was only to be opened in the event of his death, it read

’If I die on the battlefield for my Country-glorious England-I shall be satisfied. God is with me always’’

He was buried in a small cemetery on 12th November by the Reverend J P Hales.
